Are you thinking about your next recruitment process? Are you considering how best to carry out the assessment remotely, ensuring that it runs smoothly and professionally and delivers robust results?
Doing this remotely is becoming the “new normal” but it is still new to many recruiters and candidates. The use of on-line and video technology comes with its own advantages and flaws so we’re keen to share our thoughts on how to get the best out of the process.

Dearden Assessment have been delivering remote assessments for over 20 years. We provide a full range of assessment exercises using virtual platforms, including discussion groups, verification interviews and written assessments.
Top tips for a successful remote assessment
Preparation
Preparation in advance is essential for a successful assessment centre. Plan the assessment aims, methodology and details of the process well in advance. Provide everyone involved with full information on the process, in both verbal and written format. Make sure that your guidance for candidates clearly lays out what is expected of them and when.
Timing
Allow more time than you normally would for every part of the process. It can be surprising how much longer a conversation can take via a virtual platform. All participants will also need regular breaks.
Technology
Choose an IT platform that everyone involved is familiar with and comfortable using (for example MS Teams,
Zoom). Ensure the platform you choose is secure and private, with the ability to control entry into the assessment discussion rooms.
Practice
Allow additional time to hold a practice link up with anyone who would like it to ensure they are comfortable with the IT platform, the process and their internet connection.
Have an assessment centre facilitator available to both candidates and assessors, who can be contacted in an emergency to iron out any problems.
Back-up Plan
Always have a “plan B” prepared. Think about problems that could occur and how you would overcome them. If, and when this happens, remain calm, reassure all involved and agree a way forward. For instance, we ask everyone to have a phone nearby as an emergency back up. If the IT link goes down half way through a group exercise, be prepared to switch smoothly over to a different link or a standard call.
Feedback
We hope these are helpful reflections. Our clients have found the virtual assessments to be a vital part of their recruitment process. It maintains the need for remote working, makes better use of everyone’s time and yet still identifies the key attributes that are so vital when making a recruitment decision.
