Sucessful In-House Assessments
In our previous blogs we have explored the pros and cons of running in-house assessment processes. So today we’d just like to summarise some top tips on running successful in-house assessments. These may be run entirely by your in-house staff, or they may be hybrid models utilising the skills and expertise of external providers for key areas.
Whatever model you use, here are some top tips for running insightful and robust in-house assessments.
Our top 3 tips for successful in-house assessments.
- Work out what you need to measure. Firstly, think about the requirements of the role in terms of skills, knowledge and attitudes? Also, think about organisational values and cultural aspects of the appointing team?
- Select the correct assessment tools/ activities. Whether you are using the skills of your in-house team or an external professional, you will need a suitably qualified/experienced assessor to design the assessment process. This will ensure you meet your legal obligations, that the assessment is robust, and that the processes are valid predictors of what you are looking to measure.
- Triangulate outputs from a range of assessment processes. Do not exclude a candidate on the outputs of one part of the assessment alone. All insights gleaned should be triangulated with other parts of the process to help inform the overall decision.
Getting the very best from your team and the candidates
Getting the best from people is key to any successful assessment process. So you will want to get the best from both your own staff, as well as the candidates. In addition to empowering your in-house teams, you may want to offer them development opportunities. If you plan to use external expertise for parts of the assessment process, can they help develop your in-house staff at the same time?

From a candidate perspective, you also will want to build on the positive reputation of your organisation. So a smooth process, good communication and personal, one-to-one feedback are all essential. It is vital that whoever carries out your assessments is able to deliver on these key elements.
