Have recent events caused you to re-evaluate your career options or your life choices?  Have you been thrown into a situation where you have no choice, but to re-evaluate your work?

Whilst for some, the pandemic has resulted in enforced change, it has also given others a moment to ‘pause for thought’.  Having the opportunity to work differently or to spend more time with family (or the opposite) has prompted some to consider their future work/life balance.

It can be helpful to work through that thinking in a structured way:Life balance

  • What do you see as your main achievements so far? – include family and life events in this as well as any professional or achievements in the community.
  • What are your priorities for achievement in the future? – again, look at this in a wide context.
  • What is your fantasy lifestyle? Where would your career fit in to this?
  • Back to reality – what do you want from work?

We have a handy exercise to do this. It helps you to consider all aspects of a role and what it brings to your life overall and to prioritise them.

So, what will be your next steps?

There are some obvious things like discussion with family and/or other important people in your life.

You may need to test out how realistic are your ambitions. A coach or mentor can help you to do so, and to identify a path towards achievement of your goals.

Action planning – the practical steps to achieve your ambition.

Include milestones and timescales in your plans.  What is achievable now, and what might you need to work towards?

If the change is forced upon you by a restructure in, or a change in the fortunes of, the organisation that you work for, you may find it helpful to read our previous article aimed at helping us understand the ‘Personal Impact of enforced change’.

In our next related blog we will be looking at ways in which you may be able to support your team through change.
