Understanding the personal impact of enforced change

When change is forced upon us there will be an emotional response underlying any rational response that we may choose to display.  It is important to understand these emotions and the personal impact of change both from the individual and organisational points of view.

It is important to acknowledge that emotion and the effect that it can have on our self-esteem and performance as we work through the change.

The stages that we move through are illustrated in the change curve.

Understanding Change

When we first hear of change that is to be imposed on us, we may experience denial and paralysis. Anger and frustration may precede the acceptance of the impending change.

What strategies would you employ to help you to let go of the past and focus on your future?

Support at that time can help us to move on to look at the opportunities that the change may bring, and to minimise it’s negative impact.

Moving on

Realising that we have to come to terms with the change provides an opportunity to explore ideas for our future. We may take the time to re-evaluate our future career and work/life balance.

In our next related blog we will be suggesting steps that may help with this. Coming to terms with the inevitability of the change can bring exciting new opportunities.
