What is values based recruitment?
Values based recruitment is an approach that assesses applicants’ suitability to join your organisation based on how their personal values fit with those of the organisation.
Values-based recruitment in practice
The first step is to be clear about the organisation’s values. These will be distinct to the organisation and its core business. For example:
M&S
- Quality
- Value
- Innovation
- Trust
NHS
- Respect And Dignity. All those who come into contact with the NHS will be treated with the utmost respect and dignity, whether that is patients, families or staff.
- Commitment To Quality Of Care.
- Compassion.
- Improving Lives.
- Working Together For Patients.
- Everyone Counts.
NHS organisations use these as a basis to develop local values.

Microsoft
- Innovation
- Diversity and Inclusion
- Corporate social responsibility
- Philanthropies
- Environment
- Trustworthy Computing

If your organisation has not yet developed a defined set of values, they can be developed working with your employees to identify the essential values that need to characterise the organisation for it to successfully achieve its vision and purpose.
So how can an individual’s values be seen to aligned with the organisation’s values (or not)?
By engaging employees in identifying how they know that the value is satisfied and also how they know it has not been satisfied, the behaviours that manifest the values can become clear.
It is against those behaviours that applicants who wish to join the organisation can be assessed. Along with the assessment of knowledge and skills needed in the role, the behaviours are a strong indicator of an applicant’s suitability for the job.
So how do you assess the behaviours that underpin the values of your candidates?
