In our last article we looked at the concept of a growth mindset and potential opportunities it presents for team and individual performance. In this article we will look at ways in which we can support the development of a positive growth mindset in ourselves and those around us.
This is particularly relevant in times of change and how we deal most positively and productively with the challenges we may face.
The importance of a growth mindset
The concept of Growth Mindset has been shown to be fundamental in cultivating excellence, resilience and leadership development. In teams around the world, this one skill has been identified as a key determinant of both success and resilience.
So, how to support the development of a growth mindset
Thankfully, a growth mindset can be developed and encouraged. The human body makes this possible through neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the human brain to change how it responds at a neuronal level as a result of exposure to new practices and experiences.
The development of a growth mindset is a vast topic, but here are just a few potentially important changes that may be helpful.
Welcome failure
View every failure as a positive learning opportunity. Every time you fail at something,
you’ve learned a new way to not do it that way. Acknowledge that you may fail at many things, and tell yourself that that’s okay. Once you succeed at something, the learning process to get there will seem less important.
Ask for help
We live in an age where we want to rapidly access and gain new knowledge. But not everything can be self-taught. When faced with a particular challenge, don’t be afraid to ask for the help or advice from an experienced colleague or trusted source.
Be inspired by and inspire others
If you feel like the challenge you are facing is impossible, look for others who have succeeded in it in the past. Learn from them. Let yourself be inspired by them. Learn about the challenges, and failures they faced and how they overcame them.
If you can’t find anyone to look up to, set yourself that challenge. Become the person who will inspire others.
Just go for it. Don’t over analyse it.
Sometimes, there’s no way to tell what lies ahead of you from the start. There is a place for just going for it, and use it as a learning experience.
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” ―Dale Carnegie
So in summary
By exploring our blind spots and understanding the neuroscience of change we can start to see how we can develop our brains to maximise performance and be more adaptable, resilient and collaborative team members. Every experience, whether it be a success or failure, will become an opportunity to grow and develop.
Growth itself is a continuous process, so remember to measure your progress in small milestones rather than big changes.
There is no perfect outcome, or perfect way of achieving something new…… there’s just a better way.
